You’ve decided to put a rug in your room and are now super busy picking a rug that goes well with your interior. But that’s trickier than you thought. You have already leafed through several brochures, looked at home magazines, browsed the internet and found inspiration in furniture shops, but you just can’t figure out; which colour should you choose? Cream, beige, taupe, orange, purple, pink? Apart from the pattern, shape and size of the rug, colour is the most important choice you have to make when buying a new rug. You have to assume that the rug will be around for a while, so you have to be really happy with it. The following step-by-step plan can help you choose the right colour.

Step 1 – Light or dark
For now, don’t think immediately in colours but in light or dark. Do you want a light-coloured rug, or do you go for a dark one? This is a matter of taste, but also a bit of common sense. If you have young children in the house who regularly have a tasty strawberry lemonade in their glass, or pets running around outside having a good romp through the woods and then ‘drying off’ on your rug, it is obviously not very sensible to have a radiant white rug in the house. It’s better to go for a slightly darker rug that you can see less dirt on, such as black or anthracite rugs. Dark colours like blue and red can be fine. On a colourful rug you also tend to see fewer stains. If you live alone and always walk in your socks, you could go for a completely white carpet. By the way, ‘light’ does not necessarily have to mean snow-white, there are light carpets in different shades.
Step 2 – Stand out or quieter look
Now that you have chosen light or dark, the second question to ask yourself is: ‘Do I want the rug to stand out nicely in the room, or do I go for a quieter look?’ If you opt for the latter, it’s best to pick a rug that matches the colour of the floor, furniture and walls of the room. Back to basics, then, but not without losing the warmth and cosiness that a rug brings. If you want the rug to be a nice eye-catcher, choose colours that contrast with the rest of the room. If you have furniture in calm colours such as grey and beige, the rug can be a nice eye-catcher, and you can choose a bright colour or a busy design, or a combination of the two. Then, to create a scene, you can reflect the colour of the rug in the room by using accessories in the same shades. For example, choose a orange rug, then it is nice to hang a print in the same colour on the wall.

Step 3 – Look around
Look around the room where you want to put the rug. What colours do you see? Look not only at the sofa, but also at other things like the colour of the wall, your accessories, paintings and plants. The colour accents you see around you can be reflected in your rug. If you have a lot of plants in your home, think about a green rug. Just remember that the colour should also look good with the furniture. Do you find this difficult? Then just take pen and paper, or better still some colour pencils, and write or draw the colours you see around you. Of course, it could also be that you already have your eye on a rug and want it to fit well in the room. You can then reflect the colours of the rug in accessories in the room. For example, choose a nice turquoise rug, then you can put cushions in the same colour on the sofa.

Extra tips:
- If your home is already brightened up with coloured walls and colourful furniture pieces, choose a more neutral rug to avoid complete chaos in the living room.
- Take a cushion from the sofa to a rug shop to see which colour rug goes best with the sofa. (After that, you can simply order a rug of the same colour from us online).
- You can find a lot of colour schemes on the internet. Google on ‘colour scheme’ and click on image and you will see exactly which colours go well together or contrast perfectly with each other.
There are a lot of colours to choose from. Do you like grey and silver, or do you prefer yellow, gold, blue or jade? In our shop, you can choose from a huge palette of colours. Hopefully, the above roadmap will help you choose the right colour for your rug. But remember; always choose a rug that makes you happy. After all, you are the one who should enjoy it, every single day. If you prefer to colour outside the lines, you can always put aside the roadmap, grab a dartboard with all the colours pinned on it and throw a dart with your eyes closed.
