How to choose the right office rug

If your office could use some more atmosphere, it is a good idea to put rugs in your office space. But did you know that they not only create atmosphere? An office rug is also super functional! This is because they improve comfort and reduce noise pollution. As the atmosphere and acoustics improve, it has a positive effect on the productivity of you and your employees. In this blog, we explain what to consider when buying office rugs.

1. Defining the space

First of all, it is important to determine in which room the rug will be placed. After all, an office building can consist of many different rooms. From entrances to brainstorming rooms and from workstations to lounges. Each space exudes its own unique atmosphere, so make sure the colour and any patterns of the rug match it.

2. Choosing the right colours and patterns

Once you have determined the space, it is important to choose the right colours and patterns for on the rug. Think about what you want to radiate. Neutral colours such as beige, grey or taupe are easy to combine and exude professionalism. Blue rugs also suit workplaces very well, as these shades promote calmness and concentration. High-toned colours such as red, orange or yellow are good to use in spaces where energy and creativity are key.

Besides solid rugs, you can of course choose patterned rugs. Geometric and abstract patterns provide dynamism and creativity. Natural patterns with, for example, leaves or floral create a soothing atmosphere, which in turn suits a lounge, for instance. You can also choose an area rug with traditional patterns, which creates a formal look. For example, in meeting rooms or boardrooms. Always keep in mind that the style of the rug should match the rest of the interior.

3. Which materials rugs are most suitable for the office?

Office rugs are made of all kinds of different materials. But which material is best? That depends on a number of factors. In which room will you put the office rug? What is the budget? And do you want a thick or low-pile rug?

When the rug is used under a table or desk, it is important to take into account the fact that the wheels of an office chair have to easily slide over it. It is therefore advisable to choose a low pile rug. These are available in materials such as polypropylene or wool.

  • Polypropylene rugs: A relatively cheap option that resists stains well and is easy to clean. Polypropylene has good wear resistance and retains its colour and shape well under daily use.
  • Wool rugs: Wool is a more expensive material, but offers excellent durability and resilience, making it a good choice for high-end office spaces. Wool is also naturally dirt-resistant and easy to maintain. With durability in mind, it is definitely the best option as an office rug.
  • Cotton rugs: A cotton rug is comfortable but less durable than polypropylene or wool. Cotton rugs are suitable for less crowded office spaces or as a stylish accent in quiet rooms. Cotton requires regular maintenance and is less resistant to stains and wear than other materials.

Will the rug be used in a room where warmth and cosiness are key? Then you can also opt for a thick rug. However, these rugs are considerably less popular in office spaces than low-pile rugs. Thick rugs are also made exclusively of synthetic materials such as polyester or polypropylene.

4. Choosing the right shape

Now that you have chosen the right colour and material, it is time to decide on the shape. Always take a good look at where the office rug will be placed.

  • Rectangular rugs: Rectangular rugs are by far the most commonly used in office spaces, as they are ideal for under desks or conference tables. They are often used to demarcate different work areas in an open-plan office.
  • Square rugs: Square rugs are recommended in square spaces and create a symmetrical look.
  • Round and oval rugs: Want to create a more playful, cosy look? Then a ruond or oval rug are the best option. This is because they create a friendly, informal atmosphere and can soften the hard lines in a room. Round rugs fit well under round tables, for example.
  • Runners: Finally, you can also opt for a runner. This is an area rug where one side is a lot longer than the other. This elongated rug is ideal for narrow spaces, such as in the hall or corridor, or as an accent next to a desk.

So, all in all, the shape of an office rug is entirely dependent on the atmosphere you want to exude, and the room in which the rug will be placed.

5. Choosing the right size

Equally important is to choose the right size of office rug. Fortunately, there are some simple rules of thumb you can take in hand to determine the right size of your rug.

  • Choose the right edge distance: Make sure to leave at least 30-45 cm space between the edges of the rug and the walls so that the rug fits nicely into the room.
  • Furniture placement: Make sure the rug provides enough space around the furniture so that it does not form an obstacle and the furniture does not hang over the edge of the rug. Rather take a rug that is too big than one that is too small.
  • Walking routes: Keep in mind frequently used walking routes and make sure the rug does not get in the way or create dangerous situations.

6. Keep safety in mind

Especially in office spaces, safety is paramount. It is therefore advisable to use an anti slip underlay rug to be used under the rugs in office buildings. This is because rugs, especially on smooth floors, can shift or curl up, posing a tripping hazard for employees and visitors.

An anti slip underlay keeps the rug firmly in place, reduces the risk of slipping and prevents unwanted movement. This not only contributes to a safe working environment, but also to the longevity of your rug, as it prevents it from wear and tear or damage due to constant shifting.

So it is definitely worth purchasing an anti slip underlay to go with the rug. It is a simple and effective way to increase office safety while keeping the office rug looking nice. If you place tables or desks on the rug, you often have less need for an anti slip underlay as the furniture will hold the rug in place and prevent it from shifting. But of course, extra security is never wrong.

Sustainability and environmental friendliness are high on the agenda of more and more companies. This is why many companies nowadays choose rugs made from ecologically responsible materials, such as wool, jute or cotton. In addition, when purchasing rugs, we at Tapeso always check that all raw materials used are responsibly sourced. In addition, all our rugs bear the Care & Fair label. The Care & Fair label guarantees that a rug has been produced in an ethically responsible manner, paying attention to fair working conditions and environmentally friendly processes. The label also assures that producers do not use child labour and are committed to better working conditions in the rug industry.
