How to place a rug under furniture

A rug can truly transform your seating area. Whether you have a cosy corner sofa, a sleek two-seater or a generous three-seater, the choice and placement of the rug plays an essential role in creating the perfect atmosphere in your interior. For example, a common question is whether the rug should be in front of or under the sofa. 

Placing the rug near the sofa

When you put a rug next to your sofa, you connect the different pieces of furniture in your seating area in a stylish way. But how do you go about it? It starts with choosing the rug and how to place it. You also look at the furniture around you such as a coffee table and how best to place the rug with it. The best effect is created when the rug extends slightly on both sides of the sofa. On the other side, place the armchair or a second sofa on the rug. But this also depends on exactly what kind of sofa you have. Another consideration is the floor you are going to cover and the colour of the sofa. Then you also have the issue of whether it is better to place the rug in front or just below the sofa.

A two-seater sofa is all about cosiness and compactness. A rug can serve as a stylish extension of the sofa. Place the rug under the front part of the sofa and let it stick out a few inches on all sides. This creates a cosy look without overwhelming the space.

With a three-seater sofa, you can go a little bigger with your rug. Place the rug under the entire seating area of the sofa, making sure it sticks out evenly on all sides. This creates a balanced look and emphasises the symmetry of the seating area.

For corner sofas, it is important to embrace spaciousness. A large rug connecting all parts of the corner sofa creates a harmonious look. Place the rug under the entire surface of the corner sofa, keeping in mind the protruding parts of the sofa. This emphasises the dynamics of the corner arrangement and creates unity in the seating area.

Placing the rug under the sofa

For a seamless look, you can choose to lay the rug under the sofa. This gives a sense of unity to your interior, and it emphasises the shape of the rug. Want to create a nice unity in your interior? Then we recommend sliding the rug about 20 cm under the sofa. With the rug under the sofa – just under the front legs or all the way up – you make the most of the connecting effect of the rug.

Placing the rug in front of the sofa

Another option is to place the rug in front of your sofa. Here, you can choose to have the rug end just in front of the legs of the sofa or, alternatively, let it run a little under the sofa. Experiment with the position until you find the right balance. Also consider what size you want for your rug, do you want a small rug or a large rug? 

How do you lay a rug under the dining table?

With a long dining table, for example, it is advisable to choose an XXL rug. That way, the rug will be well below the table edge, showing off the pattern on the rug. It’s a shame if the pattern is barely noticeable because the rug only just reaches the edge of the table. Of course, it is also down to a matter of taste. 

To achieve an optimal look, the rug should be at least 70 cm longer and wider than the dining table. This will prevent the chair legs from hitting the edges of the rug when moving. In addition, the design of the sides plays an extra important role, as the centre of the rug is often covered by the table. A well thought-out design on the sides adds to the overall aesthetic of the dining area.

How do you lay down a rug in the bedroom?

The ideal position for a bedroom rug is, visually, next to the bed or at the foot of the bed. In doing so, realise that when you get out of bed, it is also just nice to be able to stand on a warm rug instead of a cold floor. You have the option of partially hiding the rug under the bed or placing it next to the bed. For a spacious bedroom, it is also worth considering a large rug under the bed. Make sure the bed is in the centre of the rug for optimal visual effect. This contributes to a harmonious overall look in your bedroom.

Laying down a round rug

With a round rug, of course, it’s a little different. With this round shape, it is more difficult to decide which size fits best and where to place it. The round shape creates a playful dynamic in the room. Again, we recommend laying the rug (partly) under the sofa. That way, the rug connects different pieces of furniture. 

If your seating area also contains many organic shapes, connecting it with a round rug can actually create unity again. Think of a corner sofa with organic shapes, a round coffee table or other soft lines.

Prevent the annoying sliding of your rug by using an anti slip rug overlay. This handy underlay ensures the rug stays firmly in place, allowing you to enjoy your seating area carefree and won’t slip. By providing a firm grip on the floor, the anti slip underlay not only prevents unwanted sliding but also offers an extra layer of safety, especially on slippery surfaces such as wood or tiles. The anti slip underlay is best placed under a rug of the same size or one size smaller than the rug.
